Internal medicine physicians (commonly known as internists) specialize in understanding the major organ systems of adults and all of the moving parts within each of those systems. Internists have the capabilities to treat a wide variety of patients with an array of illnesses. Patients may see an internist because they have a cold or the flu, while some may be experiencing intestinal problems or diabetes symptoms.
Internists are able to diagnose and treat patients with specific illnesses and are also highly trained to focus their efforts on specific complications. Many internists take on subspecialties. Patients with internal health issues should remain aware of the different subspecialties that fall under the realm of internal medicine practices to ensure they are receiving proper treatment and diagnosis.
